It’s New Year’s Eve! Pocket Monsters Encore – Special Episode

A lot of people are always in a festive mood during the holidays. To capitalize on this celebratory feeling, the Pokemon Company had the great idea to do an end-of-the-year recap on New Year’s Eve.

Picture this: It’s 1997, you’re a kid, and school is out. It’s New Year’s Eve so you have holiday snacks, and your favorite show, Pokemon, will be on TV. Sounds like heaven, right?

Unfortunately, this New Year’s Eve episode never got to air, to the disappointment of a lot of children.

Due to the Porygon episode that aired a few weeks before New Year’s Eve, the Pokemon anime was in hot water.

The Porygon episode caused concerning health effects with its flashing lights. To mitigate the problem, the Pokemon Company had to withdraw its future episodes temporarily and went on a short hiatus.

But even after the anime came back, this recap episode never got to air or even included in video releases. No trailer, promo images, or even a synopsis exists for this episode

It’ll forever remain a New Year’s Eve mystery.

The Ice Cave – Episode 250

Because of the controversy over Jynx’s character design, the channels edited, banned, and eventually stopped airing a few Jynx-centric episodes in the US.

Some of these Jynx episodes initially survived due to 4Kids editing and cutting scenes here and there. Unfortunately, that was impossible to do for this episode since Jynx has a very prominent role.

In this episode, Ash and the gang get trapped in an ice cave where they meet a Nurse Joy with a Jynx as her assistant.

Team Rocket, as usual, causes trouble, but Ash, his Pokemon, and Jynx stop them.

In some scenes, Jynx uses Blizzard and Lovely Kiss. She even plants a smooch on Brock!

Due to 4Kids’ decision to ban Jynx scenes at that time, they ultimately decided it was impossible to remove all Jynx scenes in this episode while keeping it coherent.

And so, they skipped dubbing this episode and it went unaired.

The Uncut Story of Mewtwo’s Origin – Movie Prologue

The first Pokemon movie, Mewtwo Strikes Back, was an excellent Pokemon animated experience for a lot of fans at that time.

It captured the adventurous feeling of the anime but with a dash of mystery, a compelling villain, a thought-provoking message, and a heartwarming ending.

What a lot of fans don’t know is that the movie actually has a short prologue detailing the story of Mewtwo before the events of the movie.

This special short was supposed to play before the film. In Japan, whenever the movie would be replayed on TV, this short would even be included.

Unfortunately, although 4Kids dubbed the short for English audiences, it was entirely removed from the film and early releases.

4Kids thought that the short was too dark and serious for kids and that it touched on mature topics like cloning ethics and death.

It later got included in some DVD releases, but those DVDs are now discontinued.

Thankfully, you can watch it below!

Shaking Island Battle! Whiscash VS Barboach – Episode 375

In October 2004, the Niigata prefecture in Japan was unfortunately hit by a series of devastating earthquakes.

After the first hit, several strong aftershocks followed that further destroyed infrastructure and took many lives.

This particular episode was set to air almost a week after these earthquakes. It was understandably removed from its schedule due to the TV programs focusing on the recent catastrophe.

However, what further cemented the Pokemon Company’s decision to ultimately keep it from ever airing was the use of the move Earthquake in the episode.

In this episode, Ash and his friends are on their way to the final gym of the region when they suddenly get caught in an earthquake.

They find out that a group of Whiscash causes the earthquakes in the area. Ash then teams up with a trainer and his Barboach to get rid of the troublemaking fish Pokemon.

The use of the move Earthquake and seeing its effects is definitely a “too soon” moment for the viewers.

In addition, after this episode, the Pokemon anime never uses Earthquake, Fissure, and Magnitude in its episodes again.

Team Rocket VS Team Plasma – Episodes 680 and 681

Similar to the previous entry, a catastrophic event in Japan caused the cancellation of this two-parter.

The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, followed by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, were shocking catastrophes that caused unimaginable destruction in the Tohoku region.

Like other entries in this list, the cancelation of these episodes is totally understandable, since the whole country had to focus on the disaster.

But even years after the event, these two episodes never saw the light of day.

TV Tokyo mentioned the possibility of airing it someday.

Furthermore, there were talks that The Pokemon Company received these episodes for dubbing, but none of these episodes have aired or appeared in video releases to date.

If you’re curious about what happens in this exciting, action-filled two-parter, the scripts for these episodes surfaced online in May 2023. Give it a read if you want to know who wins between these two menacing organizations!
