Should I Power Up or Evolve First in Pokemon GO?

Should I Power Up or Evolve First in Pokemon GO?

In Pokemon GO, trainers are constantly confronted with the dilemma of whether to power up their Pokemon or evolve them first.

Doing either of these requires a lot of Stardust and candies, resources that might be scarce for you.

The decision can also influence the strength, effectiveness, and overall battle readiness of your Pokemon.

So, let’s answer the question: is it best to power up your Pokemon before they evolve, or vice-versa?

Better to Power Up or Evolve?

There is no correct answer when it comes to powering up or evolving your Pokemon first.

However, you must use your precious Stardust optimally because powering up your Pokemon at higher levels requires a lot of it.

Therefore, there is a general preference among the Pokemon GO community to evolve before powering up.

This way you’ll reveal your Pokemon’s final moveset and at that point, you can decide whether to invest more Stardust leveling it up and using TMs to get its desired moveset.

Furthermore, it will always cost the same Stardust to get your Pokemon to its max level, regardless of when you evolve it.

Second Charged Move

One important thing to note is that often it costs less to give pre-evolved Pokemon a second Charged Attack.

Having a second Charged Move is imperative for GO Battle League, so if you know this is a Pokemon you want to use going forward, it would be wise to give it a second Charged Move before evolving it.

For example, to give Togepi a second Charged Move it costs 10,000 Stardust and 25 candy whereas its final evolution, Togekiss, costs 50,000 Stardust and 50 candy.

And for clarification, when you evolve a Pokemon, it keeps its second Charged Move if you’ve already unlocked it.

In conclusion, there is little reason to not prioritize evolution ahead of powering up.

The only reason to power up first would be if you have ample TMs. But even then, you shouldn’t waste resources on powering up your Pokemon unless you know you’re going to use them in battle.

Your decision makes little difference but as discussed, there’s no reason to power up before evolving.
