How to Beat Giovanni in Pokemon GO: Best Counters (May 2023)

How to Beat Giovanni in Pokemon GO: Best Counters (May 2023)

Giovanni is the toughest opponent you’ll face in Pokemon GO.

Defeating all the Team GO Rocket Leaders – Arlo, Cliff, and Sierra – will allow you to take on the Team Rocket boss.

Giovanni’s toughest Pokemon is Shadow Regice. Prior to that, his lineup was headlined by Shadow Mewtwo.

The Shadow Pokemon you can catch when battling Giovanni is not the first Pokemon compared to the Team GO Rocket Leaders.

Instead, it will be Shadow Regice.

Giovanni Lineup May (2023)

Defeating Giovanni is quite challenging, as he will always have a Shadow Legendary Pokemon as his last one.

His final Pokemon changes each time a Team Rocket GO invasion event happens, allowing you to get different Shadow Legendary Pokemon.

Here are the Pokemon that Giovanni uses in May 2023:

  • First Pokemon: Persian
  • Second Pokemon: Nidoking/ Kingler/ Kingdra
  • Third Pokemon: Regice

This page will be updated when Giovanni’s lineup changes.

Giovanni First Pokemon

It’s no surprise to see Persian feature as Giovanni’s first Pokemon. After all, Persian is synonymous with the Team GO Rocket boss.

Fortunately, we know Giovanni’s first Pokemon will always be Persian, meaning we can prepare and counter it easily.

Persian Counters

Persian is a Normal type Pokemon that is weak to Fighting type moves and resistant to Ghost-type moves.

Giovanni Second Pokemon

Upon defeating Giovanni’s Persian, he will either use Nidoking, Kingler, or Kingdra.

It’s noteworthy that there is no pattern or method to find out which he is going to use.

Nidoking Counters

Nidoking is a dual Poison/Ground type, making it weak to Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water type moves.

It resists Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Rock type moves.

Kingler Counters

Kingler is a Water type Pokemon, so use Pokemon with Electric and Grass type moves.

Avoid using Fire, Ice, Steel, and Water type moves as it is resistant to them.

Kingdra Counters

Kingdra is a dual Dragon/Water type Pokemon, so use Dragon and Fairy type moves.

You should avoid using Pokemon with Fire, Steel, and Water type moves as they aren’t effective against Kingdra.

Giovanni Third Pokemon

Once you defeat the first two Pokemon of Giovanni, he will now reveal his Shadow Legendary Pokemon, Regice.

Unlike Team GO Rocket Leaders, Giovanni will always use the same Pokemon as his third choice.

While Shadow Regice is tough to take down, we can prepare for it with greater ease knowing its weaknesses ahead of time.

Regice Counters

Regice is actually not too tough to counter.

It is an Ice type Pokemon, meaning it is weak to Fighting, Fire, Rock, or Steel type moves.

Avoid using Ice type moves as this is Regice’s only resistance.

Best Pokemon to Use Against Giovanni

A strong Fighting type Pokemon is a must against Giovanni as his first and last Pokemon are weak to it.

The only thing you need to look out for is his second Pokemon.

You can bring Garchomp, effective against Nidoking and Kingdra, then an Electric or Grass type Pokemon for Kingler.

This means the best Pokemon against Giovanni are Lucario, Garchomp, and Zekrom.

Lucario is excellent against Persian and Regice.

While Zekrom can be a backup against Kingdra and is effective against Kingler.

Do not worry if you get defeated; you can have a rematch against Giovanni.

Once you defeat him, you will have the chance to catch Shadow Regice.
