How to Beat Arlo in Pokemon GO: Best Counters (May 2023)

Arlo is one of the three Team Rocket GO Leaders you can encounter and is considered by many trainers as the strongest Leader.

You’ll find Arlo, and the other leaders, in Team Rocket hot air balloons and when Pokestops turn black.

To help you defeat Arlo, we have listed the Pokemon he currently uses, its weaknesses, and the best Pokemon to counter them.

We also have comprehensive guides for Cliff and Sierra, too.

This article will be updated every time Arlo’s Pokemon are changed.

What Pokemon Does Arlo Use? (May 2023)

Defeating a Team Rocket GO Leader can be challenging, depending on the lineup.

The Pokemon that Arlo uses in May 2023 are:

  • First Pokemon: Teddiursa
  • Second Pokemon: Hypno, Golurk or Blaziken
  • Third Pokemon: Scizor, Banette or Luxray

Knowing each type of Pokemon’s weaknesses and resistances is vital in any form of battle.

Arlo First Pokemon

The first Pokemon of a Team Rocket GO Leader is always the Pokemon you can catch after successfully defeating them.

The first Pokemon Arlo uses is Teddiursa. Knowing Arlo’s first choice will always be Teddiursa makes defeating it easier than his later Pokemon.

Teddiursa Counters

Teddiursa is a Normal type Pokemon meaning it only has one weakness which is Fighting type moves.

It also only has one resistance – Ghost moves.

Arlo Second Pokemon

Once you defeat Arlo’s Teddiursa, he will use either Hypno, Golurk, or Blaziken.

There are no patterns or how to predict what second Pokemon Arlo will use, so you will have to prepare for all three.

Hypno Counters

Hypno is a Psychic type Pokemon which means it is weak to Bug, Dark and Ghost attacks.

Conversely, it has two resistances: Fighting and Psychic.

Arlo Third Pokemon

Arlo’s third choice Pokemon will be his strongest. He will randomly select Scizor, Banette, or Luxray.

Scizor Counters

Being a dual Bug/Steel type Pokemon, Scizor has only one weakness – Fire (doubly so).

Couple that with 9 resistances (Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Grass, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, and Steel) and you have a tough Pokemon to defeat.

It has four resistances which are Bug, Fighting, Normal, and Poison attacks.

Best Pokemon to Use Against Arlo

Ground attacks are the key to defeating Arlo in Pokemon GO.

Given Arlo’s second and third Pokemon, Tyranitar is arguably the best to counter Teddiursa with.

Torterra compliments Tyranitar well as it also covers a lot of Arlo’s Pokemon.

It’s also good to carry a fire Pokemon in case Scizor is selected. Chandelure is the most ideal option here due to its Ghost type move Shadow Ball which covers other foes, too.

If you get defeated, just heal up and challenge Arlo again until you defeat him.

Once you defeat him, you can now catch Shadow Teddiursa and even have the chance of getting it as a Shiny.

You only need to defeat two more Team Rocket GO Leaders to face Giovanni and get a Shadow Legendary!
