Fairy Type Pokemon Weakness and Strengths Guide

Fairy Type Pokemon Weakness and Strengths Guide

Added during Gen 6, Fairy types are the most recent type added into the games.

So it’s understandable that there are still some questions on how to use and defend against Fairy Pokemon.

Whether you’re still getting the hang of handling Fairy types or you’re looking for a quick guide as a refresher, we’ve made a rundown on their weaknesses, strengths, vulnerabilities and resistances.

We’ve even included a short counter strategy!

What Are Fairy Pokemon Weak Against?

Fairy type Pokemon are weak (take more damage from) the following types of moves:

  • Poison
  • Steel

That means Poison and Steel type attacks are super effective against Fairy Pokemon.

So Fairy types need avoid moves like Poison Jab, Gunk Shot, Iron Head, and Steel Beam, to name a few.

The good news is that if your Fairy Pokemon is fighting against Poison and Steel type Pokemon, those two are weak against Psychic and Fire type moves, respectively, which are often moves that Fairy types can do as well.

Interestingly, there are a few Fairy/Psychic Pokemon to choose from, although we’ve yet to see a Fairy/Fire dual type.

What Are Fairy Pokemon Strong Against?

Fairy Pokemon and Fairy type moves can dish out super-effective hits against Dark, Dragon, and Fighting type Pokemon.

Some of the strongest Fairy type moves are Dazzling Gleam, Play Rough, and Moonblast.

The addition of Fairy type during Gen 6 has definitely shaken up the strategy and gameplay of the games.

The intention behind its addition was to balance out other types so none had a distinct advantage.

What Are Fairy Pokemon Resistant To?

Fairy Pokemon are resistant to Dragon type moves.

That means Fairy types are unaffected or immune to moves like Draco Meteor and Outrage.

As mentioned above, Fairy types were added to balance out the combat against certain types. Dragon is one of them.

In Gen 1, there weren’t any types that were immune to Dragon type moves. The addition of Fairy Pokemon definitely balances things out.

Best Counters For Fairy Pokemon

With their two weaknesses in mind, it’s best to counter Fairy Pokemon with Poison and Steel type moves.

Therefore, the best counters against Fairy type Pokemon include Heatran, Revavroom, Salazzle, and Steelix.

In addition, it’s important to remember that Fairy types usually have a high Special Defense stat. They currently have the highest average on Special Defense among all the types.

Focusing on attacking their Defense with physical moves will be a better strategy.

Counter With Steel Type Moves

Not only are Steel type moves super effective against Fairy Pokemon, but a lot of Steel type attacks are also physical damaging moves.

Some examples are Bullet Punch, which is a physical move that always goes first, Iron Head for making the target flinch too, and Meteor Mash with its 90 Power and 90% Accuracy.

Counter With Poison Type Moves

If you’d rather go the Poison route, Poison types have excellent moves against Fairy Pokemon too.

As mentioned earlier, Poison Jab and Gunk Shot are good physical Poison type moves to use. Not only can they both inflict poison status on the target, but Gunk Shot also has a very high power at 120.

And as a cherry on top, you can hit your Fairy opponent with a Venoshock, which doubles its power if the target is already poisoned.

Poison is of course strong against Fairy types, but the added Fire type makes it excellent for Salazzle since Fire is resistant to Fairy moves.

And with Revavrooms Poison/Steel combo, it’s unsurprisingly deadly against Fairy Pokemon!
