The open world setting of the Lands Between allows you to make your way through Elden Ring in a variety of ways.

While there is no perfect progression path to take, you can choose a straightforward, challenging, or even a completionist path.

However, one must consider the recommended level for each area.

As a result, we’ve used this to create a guide that will take you on a rewarding and enjoyable journey across the Lands Between – that also gives you a checklist for each zone!

Before you begin your quest though, make sure you choose the best starting class for your style of play.

Here’s an overview of the best progression route you should follow based on the level recommendation in Elden Ring.

For every location, make sure to first collect its map fragment as soon as possible. Doing so will make it easier to navigate through the area.


We will not highlight every single item that is available in the game but what we believe is worth mentioning for you to get the most enjoyable and extended experience in Elden Ring.

That’s why you need to make sure to pick any crafting and upgrade materials, Consumables, Spells, Cookbook, Golden Seed, Sacred Tears, Ash of War, Spirit Ash, Talisman, Weapon, or Armor Set since these are scattered everywhere.

In addition to that, you must aim to complete all optional dungeons you come across as well.

Not only will you get additional loot and Runes for completing them, but it will also help you get better at the game.

With that being said, we’ll go over each region in more detail below.

West Limgrave

Following the tutorial area, you will begin your journey in West Limgrave.

It offers many basic types of enemies as a starting region to help you master the basics of combat.

Additionally, it has various locations, NPCs, and items for you to explore.


  • Speak to White Mask Varre
  • Get the Whetstone Knife
  • Meet Melina and unlock Torrent
  • Get the Spirit Calling Bell
  • Buy the Crafting Kit
  • Complete Murkwater Cave and meet Patches
  • Find Boc the Seamster

Don’t Forget

Given West Limgrave is the starting area in Elden Ring, you must keep an eye on these specific NPCs if you want to initiate their questline.

  • Sorceress Sellen
  • Roderika
  • Iron Fist Alexander
  • D, Hunter of the Dead

Make sure to interact with them in order to trigger their questline, otherwise, you might lock yourself out of the quest if you progress too far.

East Limgrave

As shown by the map above, East Limgrave is a sub-region of Limgrave.

It doesn’t have a lot of objectives but there are still some things that you should keep an eye out for.

This is a good starting area to help you familiarize yourself with the mechanics of the game.


  • Find Kenneth Haight
  • Liberate Fort Haight and get your reward from Kenneth Haight
  • Obtain the Flask of Wondrous Physick
  • Get Flask Materials from Minor Erdtree
  • Defeat Tibia Mariner boss to get Deathroot

Weeping Peninsula (South Limgrave)

Weeping Peninsula is a region found south of Limgrave.

As a newcomer, it’s perfect to practice what you have learned from exploring Limgrave and put it to the test. It’s a fairly easy area with a little pump up to the difficulty of it.


  • Meet Bloody Finger Hunter Yura
  • Obtain Royal House Scroll
  • Obtain all Stonesword Keys
  • Get Flask Materials from Erdtree
  • Complete Castle Morne
  • Find Irina
  • Speak with Edgar

Roundtable Hold

The Roundtable Hold serves as the player’s hub in Elden Ring.

Here, several NPCs act as merchants selling items, weapon enhancements, and Spirit Ash upgrades, while others are involved in their own questlines.

As a result, you should visit this location frequently whenever you want to upgrade your gear or keep track of certain NPCs questlines.


  • Interact with all NPCs available

Don’t Forget

  • Obtain both the Crepus’s Black-Key Crossbow and Assassin’s Prayerbook from the imp statue door.
  • Defeat the invader, Mad Tongue Alberich.

Stormveil Castle

Stormveil Castle is your first Legacy Dungeon in Elden Ring, and it contains some of the more challenging enemies that you’ve encountered so far.

Make certain that you are prepared and that you are within the recommended level for this location.


  • Defeat the Banished Knight and retrieve the Rusty Key
  • Obtain the Stonesword Keys
  • Locate Nepheli Loux and speak to her
  • Fight the Lion Guardian mini boss
  • Defeat Godrick the Grafted to get Godrick’s Great Rune and obtain the Talisman Pouch

Don’t Forget

  • Restore Godrick’s Great Rune at the Divine Tower of Limgrave

Liurnia of the Lakes

Liurnia of the Lakes is a huge region in the Lands Between, found northwest of Limgrave.

It can be reached via the passage behind Godrick the Grafted, or by taking a narrow cliffside route around the castle.

There are so many things to discover in Liurnia given its size, so make sure to take your time while you are there.

Raya Lucaria Academy

The Academy of Raya Lucaria is the second Legacy Dungeon in Elden Ring. It has a different appearance than the previous areas with a variety of new foes.

Keep in mind that you need to find an Academy Glintstone Key to access the Academy.


  • Get Conspectus Scroll
  • Obtain Glintstone Whetblade
  • Defeat Red Wolf of Radagon and get the Memory Stone
  • Get Stonesword Key
  • Defeat Moongrum, Carian Knight
  • Defeat Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon

Ainsel River (Underground)

Ainsel River is an optional underground area located in Liurnia of the Lakes.

In order to access it there are two ways; either by taking the lift down at the Ainsel River Well, or from the sending gate at the top of Renna’s Rise.


  • Collect Celestial Dew
  • Find Nomadic Merchant
  • Get Immunizing Horn Charm Talisman
  • Defeat Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella

Siofra River

Siofra River is yet another optional underground location in Elden Ring.

This region is accessible via lift from either the Siofra River Well in Limgrave or the Deep Siofra Well in Caelid.


  • Speak with Blaidd
  • Light the Fire Pillars
  • Obtain Golden Seed
  • Unlock Deep Siofra Well
  • Defeat Ancestor Spirit

Caelid South

Caelid is a region located east of Limgrave. It is mostly recognized by its red and rotting environment.

Many players visit this location right away out of curiosity, but if you’re not at the suitable level, you’ll mostly waste your time and runes there.


  • Interact Iron Fist Alexander
  • Clear Fort Gael
  • Defeat Dragon, Deathbird & Night’s Cavalry bosses
  • Find both Gowry and Millicent and interact with them
  • Complete Sellia, Town of Sorcery
  • Complete Redmane Castle
  • Meet Jerren the Witch Hunter

Atlus Plateau

The Altus Plateau is one of the major locations just north of Lake Liurnia. The golden shrubs that surround the area help to identify it.

This location can be reached in two ways: via the Grand Lift of Dectus or through the Ruin-Strewn Precipice.


  • Complete Shaded Castle
  • Visit the Second Church of Marika
  • Get Minord Erdtree Flask Upgrades
  • Complete Dominula, Windmill Village
  • Explore Eastern Altus Heights
  • Meet Goldmask
  • Get Larval Tear

Nokron, Eternal City

Nokron, Eternal City is an underground location that is only accessible after defeating Starscourge Radahn.

This a unique location in Elden Rind featuring multiple new enemies, and can be challenging even if you’re within the recommended level.


  • Obtain Larval Tears

  • Obtain Black Whetblade
  • Get Celestial Dew
  • Find the Ghostflame Torch
  • Collect Ancestral Infant’s Head

Siofra Aqueduct

The Siofra Aqueduct is a location found north of Nokron, Eternal City.

It is a relatively small area but it serves as a way to the Deeproot Depths area.


  • Meet D brother
  • Defeat Valiant Gargoyle & Valiant Gargoyle (Twinblade)

  • Use the coffin after defeating the Gargoyle boss to reach Deeproot Depths.

Deeproot Depths

Deeproot Depths is another underground location in Elden Ring.

As mentioned earlier, it is accessible by taking the coffin after defeating the Gargoyle boss fight in Siofra Aqueduct.


  • Defeat Erdtree Avatar
  • Activate Walking Mausoleum
  • Defeat Crucible Knight Siluria
  • Defeat Fia’s Champions

Mt Gelmir

Mt. Gelmir is a volcanic region found north of Liurnia of the Lakes.

It can be reached in multiple ways, either from Atlus Plateau, through Rya’s questline, or by the Abductor Virgin at the bottom of Raya Lucaria Academy


  • Complete Fort Laiedd
  • Defeat Magma Wyrm
  • Talk to Iron Fist Alexander
  • Complete Gelmir Hero’s Grave
  • Defeat Full-Grown Fallingstar Beast
  • Meet Tanith and join the Volcano Manor
  • Interact with all NPCs in the Manor
  • Complete Volcano Manor

Don’t Forget

  • Obtain Memory Stone from defeating Demi-Human Queen Maggie
  • Find Primeval Sorcerer Azur and obtain Comet Azur
  • Defeat Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy.

Nokstella, Eternal City

The Nokstella, Eternal City lies in Ainsel River Main and covers most of the western part.

You can get there by following the river west from the northern Uhl Palace Ruins.


  • Collect Miniature Ranni and interact with it
  • Defeat Baleful Shadow
  • Obtain Stonesword Key

  • Obtain all three Celestial Dews

Lake of Rot

The Lake of Rot is a small region that contains dangerous red waters that cause scarlet rot, so make sure to have enough Preserving Boluses for that.

It can be reached from the Ainsel River Main by traveling southwest from Nokstella Waterfall Basin.


  • Defeat Dragonkin Soldier
  • Explore the Grand Cloister
  • Find the Mushroom Crown

Don’t Forget

  • Defeat Astel, Naturalborn of the Void and make your way to the Moonlight Altar (Ranni questline)


Dragonbarrow Map Elden Ring

The Dragonbarrow is located directly north of Caelid.

To get there, you can either travel through Sellia, Town of Sorcery, take the Siofra River lift, or use the sending gate to the Bestial Sanctum.


  • Locate Gurranq, Beast Clergyman
  • Obtain Memory Stone from Lenne’s Rise
  • Obtain the Stonesword Key

Don’t Forget

  • Get Dectus Medallion (Right)

Leyndell, Royal Capital

The Leyndell, Royal Capital is probably the most important location in Elden Ring.

The Royal Capital is an appealing location with both the surrounding and the enemies that the area offers.

It is only accessible after getting and activating two Great Runes from Rennala and Godrick.

Keep in mind that you need to find all the items and finish all quests in this location before getting to the Fire Giant boss fight.

Advancing after that will result in losing access to these items since the location will change to Leyndell, Ashen Capital.


  • Defeat the Tree Sentinel duo

Forbidden Lands

Forbidden Lands is a snow-covered area that is constantly covered in heavy fog. It connects Leyndell Royal Capital to the Mountaintops of the Giants.

There isn’t much to do in this small area since the fog can make it difficult to travel around.


  • Defeat Night’s Cavalry
  • Collect Golden Seed
  • Defeat Black Blade Kindred
  • Activate Grand Lift of Rold

Mountaintop of the Giants

The Mountaintops of the Giants region is located in the far northeast and is one of Elden Ring’s final regions.

This area is recognized as the most challenging you will encounter so far, so staying within the recommended level will make your journey more manageable.

In order to take the Grand Lift of Rold to the Mountaintops of the Giants, you will need the Rold Medallion.

You can get the Rold Medallion Melina after you defeat Morgott, The Omen King.


  • Meet Shabriri
  • Complete Minor Erdtree
  • Speak with Brother Corhyn
  • Complete Stargazer’s Ruins
  • Complete Spiritcaller Cave
  • Visit the First Church of Marika
  • Obtain Giant’s Prayerbook
  • Defeat Fire Giant

Consecrated Snowfield

Consecrated Grounds is an optional area in Elden Ring.

This area is only accessible after obtaining both halves of the Secret Haligtree Medallion and using it at the bottom of the Grand Lift of Rold.

  • Defeat Night’s Cavalry
  • Complete Yelough Anix Tunnel
  • Visit Apostate Derelict
  • Activate the Walking Mausoleum

Mohgwyn Palace

Mohgwyn Palace is an underground location beneath Caelid that can only be reached via a gateway teleporter in Consecrated Snowfield.

Alternatively, you can get to this area by using the Pureblood Knight’s Medal given by White Mask Varre when you finish his questline.

  • Obtain Stonesword Key
  • Find the Imprisoned Merchant
  • Explore Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum
  • Defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood

Miquella’s Haligtree

Miquella’s Haligtree is a well-known legacy dungeon located far north of the Consecrated Snowfield.

This area is essentially a big tree filled with dangerous enemies. It is accessible by completing the Ordina Liturgical Town.

Malenia, Blade of Miquella, arguably Elden Ring’s most difficult boss, can be located in this location.


  • Explore the Haligtree Canopy
  • Defeat Loretta, Knight of the Haligtree
  • Explore Elphael, Brace of the Haligtree
  • Defeat the Lesser Ulcerated Tree Spirit
  • Obtain Marika’s Soreseal
  • Complete Millicent’s questline
  • Defeat Malenia, Blade of Miquella

Crumbling Farum Azula

Crumbling Farum Azula is floating ruins with tornadoes, and reaching it indicates you are about to complete Elden Ring’s main storyline.

This place can only be accessed from the Giant Mountaintops, and this is how you get to the Crumbling Farum Azula.

Keep in mind that once you defeat the final boss of this location, an irreversible change will happen to Leyndell, Royal Capital. So make sure to finish other NPCs’ quests and grab any loot you need.


  • Explore the Dragon Temple
  • Obtain Stonesword Key
  • Defeat the Godskin Duo
  • Defeat Dragonlord Placidusax
  • Collect the Old Lord’s Talisman
  • Defeat Maliketh, the Black Blade

Leyndell, Ashen Capital

Leyndell, Ashen Capital is the ruined version of Leyndell, Royal Capital. It is the final area of Elden Ring, where you will confront the final boss.

This version of the capital is available only after defeating Maliketh, the Black Blade.


  • Complete Brother Corhyn/Goldmask’s quest
  • Collect the Erdtree’s Favor +2 Talisman
  • Defeat Sir Gideon Ofnir, the All-Knowing
  • Defeat Godfrey, First Elden Lord/Hoarah Loux, Warrior
  • Defeat the final boss: Radagon of the Golden Order/Elden Beast

Subterranean Shunning-Grounds

The Subterranean Shunning-Grounds can be found in Leyndell, Royal Capital, or later in Leyndell Ashen Capital.

It is reached by descending the steps at the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace and heading left directly out of the double grate doors.

Even if you are able to enter this area the first time you arrive in Leyndell, it is only suggested that you do so before defeating the final boss.


  • Obtain Mohg’s Shackle
  • Complete the Leyndell Catacombs and defeat Esgar, Priest of Blood
  • Find the Dung Eater and progress through his questline
  • Defeat Mohg, the Omen

Don’t Forget

  • Complete Hyetta’s quest
