Top 40 Coolest Pokemon of All Time

Top 40 Coolest Pokemon of All Time

In our hearts of hearts, we truly believe that all Pokemon are great. Somewhere out there, there’s a fan for even the most obscure Pokemon. But the reality is that some designs just look better than others.

With Pokemon, cuteness and coolness factors definitely play a major part when it comes to a critter’s appeal. Since we’ve featured numerous cute Pokemon already, we decided to put the spotlight on the cool ones this time.

From icy cool Glastrier and stoic Corviknight to crowd favorites Lucario and Greninja – we judged their designs, lore, skills, and overall appeal to come up with 40 of the coolest looking Pokemon ever!

Put on your sunnies as we cruise down this rad list.

40. Deino

Source: Bulbapedia

First on our list is Deino, a Dark/Dragon Pokemon from Gen 5.

While its later evolutions look cool, with Hydreigon actually evolving late at level 64, Deino is already cool as it is.

It’s a quadrupedal Pokemon with blue skin and black fur that has purple spots all over it. The fur covers the neck area, head, and the upper portion of its face.

As you can see, Deino can’t, well, see. Aside from its fur shielding its eye area, Deino actually lacks sight.

According to its Pokedex entries, Deino bites and bumps into things to detect its surroundings. It even gets injuries due to this method.

Adapting like that is pretty cool in our books!

39. Garchomp

What would happen if you fuse a jet plane, a shark, and a dragon? Thankfully, Game Freak already did their research and brought into the world this rad Pokemon from Gen 4 – Garchomp.

Garchomp is a Dragon/Ground Pokemon that resembles a hammerhead shark with draconian features and jet plane engines on its head. It even has a star on its snout!

Due to its jet engine-like appendages, Mach Motors, one of the companies in the Galar Region that offers Poke Jobs, uses Garchomp’s likeness for its logo.

Garchomp also Mega Evolves. Its wings turn into red blades, which look mega cool.

However, this actually angers Garchomp since it’s very proud of its wings.

38. Salamence

Salamence and Mega Salamence showing its wings
Source: Bulbapedia

The Dragon train is not stopping yet! Bringing in immense coolness is Salamence!

This salamander and dragon combo came from Gen 3. It is considered a Pseudo Legendary and has a dual typing of Dragon/Flying.

You might think it earned its place in our cool list because of its red wings and overall dragon appearance, but there’s actually more to Salamence than meets the eye.

According to its Pokedex entries, the Salamence evolution line eagerly yearned to grow wings and soar the skies. Because of this strong desire, it actually managed to influence its DNA and finally sprouted wings when it evolved into Salamence!

Salamence literally willed itself to have wings.

And the best part? It turns its wings into a red crescent-shape form when it Mega Evolves. It’s known as “the blood-soaked crescent.” Cool and terrifying!

37. Infernape

Let’s take a break from all the Dragon Pokemon and warm ourselves up with this next entry. Infernape, the Fire/Fighting Pokemon from Gen 4 is up next.

Infernape is the final evolution of Gen 4’s Chimchar. It’s a bipedal primate Pokemon with fiery hair, brown and white fur, and yellow swirly orbs that look like joint protectors.

Befitting its Fighting type, Infernape is known to use a special type of martial arts that uses the entirety of its limbs. This is based on Sun Wukong, which is the inspiration for Infernape’s design. The Journey to the West protagonist is a master combatant afterall.

Interestingly, Dragonball is based on the same 16th century novel. So Dragonball fans, we got your cool Pokemon right here.

36. Gengar

Joining our cool Pokemon gang is this ball of shadow and mischief, Gengar!

Gengar is based on the concept of ghosts, shadow people, ominous black cats, and the mischievous Cheshire Cat character.

It’s a stealthy Pokemon who likes to hide in shadows to spook and surprise anyone. Halloween people, I hope he’s your favorite Pokemon already.

It can be heard laughing in the moonlight. Gengar can also lower the temperature around it – it’s literally cool.

Its Shiny Mega Evolution is also pretty impressive. With its white ghost-like appearance and how it phases in and out of the ground, it’s one of the coolest Shiny Pokemon ever.

Even Ken Sugimori is impressed – Gengar is his favorite Pokemon!

35. Noivern

Noivern with its spread out wings
Source: Bulbapedia

“Oh my, what big ears you have, Noivern!” “All the better to look cool, my dear.”

Swooping in with its mighty ears is Noivern, the Sound Wave Pokemon!

Noivern is a unique bat Pokemon due to its Flying/Dragon typing. You can definitely see some wyvern details in its design, along with different bat features.

The most notable detail in Noivern’s design is its huge ears. It looks like a pair of loudspeakers, which suits a Pokemon that uses ultrasonic waves as an attack.

Some fans have expressed that its ears look like big eyes at first glance. Someone pointed out that it might be an intimidating tactic to scare away other Pokemon. Whether that’s intended or not, we’ll think of it as another cool Noivern detail.

34. Regidrago

Regidrago with glowing eyes
Source: Bulbapedia

Legendary Titans, represent! One of the newest members of the Regi gang is here to show off their group’s coolness. Make way for the Dragon Titan from Gen 8, Regidrago!

According to legends, Regigigas created several golem-like Pokemon using different elemental energies. With Regidrago, it was created using crystalized dragon energy.

Unfortunately, Regigigas ran out of crystals and only formed the head part of Regidrago. If you put its arms together, it looks like a dragon head with upper and lower jaws. It is said to be the head of an ancient dragon Pokemon.

But even in this incomplete form, it is still considered to be a very powerful Dragon type. It’s so powerful that ancient people feared it would become even stronger and cause a rampage once complete. Thus, it was sealed in a temple.

33. Zygarde

Zygarde and its different forms
Source: Bulbapedia

The Pokemon series has introduced multiple forms for Pokemon – Shiny, Mega, and the newest crystal-like Terastal form, to name a few. However, Zygarde stands out because of the unique requirements of its forms.

Zygarde has a total of three forms: 10% Forme, 50% Forme, and Complete Forme. You need to gather Zygarde Cores and Cells to make these possible.

At 10%, Zygarde looks like a canine Pokemon, with black fur and a green collar. At 50%, it becomes serpentine-like, with black and green scales all over its body. Finally, in its Complete Forme, it is now humanoid-looking and has Cores that can act independently.

These different forms span from the X and Y games to Sun and Moon. Gathering them is a pretty cool experience!

32. Machamp

Machamp and Gigantamax Machamp in battle
Source: Bulbapedia

Multiple forms? How about multiple arms? Flexing his arms all the way from Kanto, here’s Machamp!

Machamp is a Fighting type Pokemon from the Gen 1 games. According to the Pokedex, it has mastered all known martial arts and can easily give a series of quick punches and karate chops.

Machamp can even easily pin opponents with its arms and hurl them over the horizon!

But if you think four arms are fearsome already, wait till it becomes a bigger set of four arms in its Gigantamax form! It is said that Gigantamax Machamp’s punches have the strength of bomb blasts! And carrying an entire ship to port? Easy-peasy!

You’re a champ, Machamp.

31. Hitmonchan

Hitmonchan training in boxing
Source: Bulbapedia

In the red corner, weighing 110.7 lbs, and a Gen 1 Pokemon with Fighting as its type, it’s Hitmonchan!

After Machamp, the punches don’t stop yet on our list. This time, Hitmonchan hits the ring and shows us a quick 1-2 punch is the way to go for coolness.

The Pokedex notes that Hitmonchan’s punches are lightning fast and can’t even be noticed with the naked eye. It’s as fast as a bullet train!

Hitmonchan can also angle and twist its punches like a corkscrew to drill through and pulverize hard surfaces. Just its fists grazing on your skin can burn you!

Red boxing gloves definitely fit it. But if you want blue ones, you’ll have to catch its Shiny form.

30. Urshifu

Urshifu demonstrating its Single Strike Style and Rapid Strike Style
Source: Bulbapedia

The Pokemon games always add new and unique methods to keep the series fresh. With Sword and Shield’s Expansion Pass, we were introduced to Urshifu’s unique evolution and typing requirement!

Urshifu is a Legendary Fighting Pokemon that gets a second typing based on the training tower you pick. Called the Tower of Two Fists, it consists of the Tower of Darkness and Tower of Waters.

If you pick Tower of Darkness, Urshifu becomes Fighting/Dark and has the Single Strike Style. Tower of Waters yields an Urshifu that is Fighting/Water and has Rapid Strike Style – we’ve even featured it in our Legendary Water Type ranking.

Single Strike Urshifu prefers a no holds barred kind of fighting. Rapid Strike Urshifu would rather observe and dodge. Both forms are pretty cool in their own right!

29. Arcanine

Arcanine with its fluffy mane and tail
Source: Bulbapedia

Known as a beautiful and majestic Pokemon that’s truly glorious to behold as it runs through the prairies, it’s difficult not to include Arcanine in our cool list.

Even though it’s not an actual Legendary Pokemon, it got the Legendary Pokemon category due to how it’s praised and regarded in some parts of the Pokemon world.

According to the Pokedex, it’s a Pokemon that is mentioned in Eastern folklore. Legends say that Arcanine fought beside a general during a war in the past. Meanwhile in Hisui, a special Arcanine blessed by Arceus was worshiped.

But is it a dog or a lion? All we know is that we bow down to your greatness, Arcanine.

28. Volcanion

Volcanion fighting other Pokemon and protecting Magearna
Source: Pokemon Fandom, Bulbapedia

It’s full steam ahead with our next Pokemon – Volcanion!

When it comes to unique typing in the Pokemon series, Volcanion spearheads this with its Fire/Water Mythical status. It’s the only one of its typing and can use strong moves like Hydro Pump and Overheat!

Aside from this cool combo of opposite typing and moves, we also see two sides of Volcanion in the anime.

In the Pokemon movie Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, we see its fierce side through blasting others with Steam Eruption.

But it also showed its warm and gentle side whenever it showed its protective affection to Magearna.

27. Xerneas

Xerneas with its glowing horns
Source: Bulbapedia

Gracing us with its majestic presence is Xerneas, the Fairy Legendary from Gen 6.

From the get-go, you’ll immediately notice Xerneas’s huge and imposing horns. When in Active Mode, which is one of its two forms, the horns glow in multiple colors. It makes the already impressive horns look all the cooler.

It is said that Xerneas has the power to grant immortality or heal those who are petrified by Yveltal. But when it uses too much life energy, Xerneas turns into a tree to slumber and recover for a thousand years.

This whole mysterious stag lore seems to be based on Norse mythology. Eikthyrnir is a stag in Valhalla whose horns glow and drip with dew, as it eats leaves from a tree called Leraor.

Pokemon and mythology? That’s definitely cool in our books!

26. Haxorus

Haxorus showing its red-tipped blades
Source: Pokemon Fandom, Bulbapedia

Haxorus is one of those Pokemon that immediately registers as cool once you see it. It’s dinosaur-like, uniquely designed with its natural golden armor, and has notable tusks.

These tusks that protrude from its jaws look like blades with red edges. The Pokedex mentions that it is quite sharp and can cut through steel!

Haxorus maintains its blades’ sharpness by consuming dirt with lots of minerals. That doesn’t sound too yummy, but that’s maintenance for you!

Even with its fierce look, Haxorus is noted to be good-natured. It only gets really aggressive when it becomes territorial.

We’ve seen how it is as a companion of Iris in the anime. From a cute Axew, it grew into a cool Haxorus!

25. Steelix

Steelix and Mega Steelix digging in the mountains
Source: Pokemon Fandom, Bulbapedia

It’s sturdy, steely, and snakey – and yes, pretty cool. Up next is the Steel/Ground Iron Snake Pokemon, Steelix!

After evolving from Onix, Steelix has now adapted really well when it comes to digging.

Steelix digs even more than its pre-evolution and lives deeper underground. Its jaws can easily chew boulders, and its eyes have adjusted in the dark. The heat and pressure underground has made Steelix’s body harder than a diamond.

If that’s cool, wait until it Mega Evolves! Mega Steelix increases its length, size, and mass. Its lower jaw becomes armored, it gets ridges on its body, and tiny metallic materials float around it,

Seriously, a steel snake Pokemon is one of the coolest concepts the Pokemon series has ever made.

24. Aegislash

Honedge showing its Blade Forme and Shield Forme
Source: Bulbapedia

Slashing its way to our list is the mighty Royal Sword Pokemon – Aegislash!

This Steel/Ghost Pokemon hails from Gen 6 and takes on the form of a golden sword with a shield.

Like other Pokemon with different versions, Aegislash can transform into two forms. But unlike others, these two versions happen in a slightly unique way.

Aegislash has the Stance Change ability. Depending on its moves used, Aegislash’s appearance and stats change. It can either turn into its Blade Forme or Shield Forme.

In Blade Forme, Aegislash exposes its sword body and holds its shield. Its Attack and Special Attack stats also increase.

Meanwhile, in Shield Forme, it covers itself with its shield. Aegislash’s Defense and Special Defense get the boost this time.

As far as swords go, this one’s pretty cool.

23. Rapidash

Fire Rapidash and Psychic Galarian Rapidash
Source: Bulbapedia

Whether it’s galloping in a fiery way or trotting with its pastel mane, Rapidash is a cool addition to our list.

In its Kantonian form, the Gen 1 form a lot of Pokemon fans are familiar with, Rapidash has a fiery mane and is essentially a unicorn on fire.

It’s also known for its agility and speed. We even see it run in the very first opening song of the Pokemon animated series!

Meanwhile, its new Galarian form turns its mane wavy and fluffy with cyan and pink streaks. Its horn becomes longer where its stored Psychic energy makes it sharp enough to slash and poke through steel!

Agile fire horse or pokey psychic horse? Take your pick!

22. Glastrier

Glastrier in its normal and Ice Rider Calyrex forms
Source: Bulbapedia

Fire and Psychic horses not up your alley? How about an icey horse? Bringing in literal coolness to our list, here’s Glastrier, the Ice Legendary from Gen 8!

To reflect its typing, Glastrier’s coat is white as snow. Its mane that connects to its mask, as well as its hooves, are frozen solid and jagged. It also has pupil-less eyes, making it look empty and white.

Glastrier also has a tendency to be aggressive, especially when it comes to its Crown Tundra territory. However, if you have Iceroot Carrots, it’ll most likely befriend you.

But the thing that makes Glastrier really cool is its ability to fuse with Calyrex, the Psychic/Grass Legendary from the same Expansion Pass. Together, they become Ice Rider Calyrex!

21. Zoroark

Zoroark in its normal and Mega Evolution forms
Source: Bulbapedia

Including Zoroark to our cool list is definitely not an illusion trick!

Zoroark is a Dark type Pokemon from Gen 5. It has a propensity for making very good illusions that fool Pokemon and humans alike.

But it’s not just using its illusions to maliciously trick people. Zoroark also uses it to hide and protect its home. Zoroarks are very protective of its pack, young, and bonded trainers.

Unfortunately, Hisuian Zoroark is a different case. Because of its harsh environment in Hisui, Zoroark couldn’t survive and died off. But due to its bitterness and resentment of its fate, it got reborn out of spite. It’s basically too stubborn to stay in the afterlife!

Despite the harrowing and heartbreaking story behind Hisuian Zoroark, it’s actually a pretty cool lore and a lesson to us about our environment.

20. Squirtle

Squirtle and the Squirtle Squad
Source: Bulbapedia

Don your sunnies and call the squad — one of the coolest turtles is in town!

Squirtle is one of those Pokemon that can balance between cute and cool. It’s absolutely adorable with its big eyes, stubby legs, and curly tail. But it can be pretty cool in action too! Water Gun and Bubble Beam, anyone?

And fun fact, it’s apparently the best Gen 1 Starter Pokemon to get, and people have research receipts to back that up!

In the anime, we saw Squirtle as one of Ash’s loyal companions and the leader of its own Squirtle Squad. It eventually left Ash’s team to continue to lead its squad and serve as firefighters. Squirtle’s not only cool but a noble one too!

19. Lunala

Lunala flying near the moon
Source: Bulbapedia

Is it a moon? Is it a bat? It’s Gen 7’s Legendary bat-moon combo, Lunala!

Lunala’s design is one of the coolest ones in the newer generations. Bats and the moon have always had a connection, and Game Freak has fused it well with this design.

Lunala spreads its limbs to reveal a blue night sky color in its inner wings. Its skeletal frames curve to show a crescent shape too.

To emphasize its moon theme, Lunala has a Full Moon phase where it turns white. And its Shiny form? A red Lunala that’s akin to a red or blood moon!

It’s one of the best looking Shiny Pokemon ever.

18. Rayquaza

Rayquaza flying in its normal and Mega Evolution forms
Source: Bulbapedia

This Dragon/Flying Legendary Pokemon from Gen 3 has a lot of cool qualities.

Firstly, it looks cool from the get-go. It has a green serpentine-like body and is able to fly in the sky. In fact, it actually lives in the atmosphere.

Secondly, it resembles a missile. Its fins, tail, and protrusions on its head all look like missile rudders.

Lastly, Rayquaza can Mega Evolve. When it does this, it gets longer and gets glowing extensions and orbs on its body. Its eye area also gets shichishito marks.

And you know how its Mega Evolution got triggered? By eating lots of meteoroids in the stratosphere!

Rayquaza’s special organ gathered the energy from the consumed meteoroids and it eventually enabled Rayquaza to Mega Evolve. Pretty metal!

17. Eternatus

Eternatus looming in the sky and causing the Darkest Day
Source: Bulbapedia

Spoiler alert: You know that whole Dynamaxing thing that Pokemon did during Gen 8? Where Pokemon become humongous and change form? Well, the cause of that is this guy!

Eternatus is a Poison/Dragon extraterrestrial Pokemon that came crashing to Earth inside a meteor around 20,000 years ago. This explains its alien-like and draconic appearance.

It caused an event called the Darkest Day thousands of years ago. Eternatus woke up, absorbed energy to survive, and triggered a black storm that darkened the skies and Dynamaxed the Pokemon around the area.

Eternatus was eventually defeated by Zacian and Zamazenta, but its power continued to leak, causing the Dynamax and Gigantamax phenomena to continue.

Aside from its cool appearance, Eternatus’s lore is an interesting tale!

16. Zacian

Zacian in its normal and Crowned Sword forms
Source: Bulbapedia

Zacian is one of Sword and Shield’s Legendary Pokemon. It’s a Legendary Fairy type that becomes Fairy/Steel when it transforms into its Crowned Sword form using a Rusted Sword.

According to legend, it was once called the Fairy King’s Sword due to how esteemed it was by allies and opponents for its skillful mastery of sword fighting. It can slash anything in just one strike!

Apparently, it got its weapon through absorbing metal particles. Its sibling and fellow Gen 8 Legendary, Zamazenta, got its shield form the same way.

While both wolf Legendary Pokemon from Gen 8 are impressive in their own rights, there’s just something cool about a wolf holding and swinging a sword in its mouth!

15. Absol

Absol in its normal and Mega Evolution forms
Source: Bulbapedia

Absol isn’t here to bring doom. In fact, we’re shedding some light on how awesome this Pokemon actually is!

With its serious expression, intense stare, scythe-like horn, and tendency to bring some bad news, Absol has been labeled as the Disaster Pokemon in Pokemon lore.

It lives in mountains far from people and rarely leaves its home. But when it detects calamities and disasters with its horn, Absol is quick to warn people and will even protect fields!

Unfortunately, because people kept seeing it whenever something bad happened, Absol was treated as a bad omen and got blamed. Nothing is further from the truth, and its Mega Evolution even shows an angel-like appearance!

Absol shows that it’s cool to be kind.

14. Raboot

Raboot kicking and practicing football
Source: Bulbapedia

Donning its jacket-like fur, Raboot is too cool not to include in our list!

The Fire type Scorbunny line is definitely sports-oriented, and Raboot shows this theme through its body fur that looks like a jacket with pockets.

But this jacket fur isn’t just for show and looking cool. For one, it helps Raboot train.

To improve its footwork, Raboot likes to kick and juggle Berries. It stops itself from using its hands by keeping them inside its jacket fur pocket.

More importantly, the jacket fur also helps Raboot stay warm and preserve heat to power up its Fire type moves.

Cool-looking and useful? We’d like a jacket of this caliber, please!

13. Corviknight

Corviknight flying in the sky as an air taxi
Source: Bulbapedia

It might have all-black feathers and has secured the 13th spot on our list, but Corviknight is far from being bad luck!

Corviknight is a Flying/Steel Pokemom from Gen 8. It’s based on ravens or crows and could be a reference to the ravens in the Tower of London.

Just like real life corvids, Corviknight is known for its intelligence in Galar. It’s one of the highly respected birds in the region due to its smarts, strength, and flying skills.

Yep, in Galar, they use Corviknights for their airborne transportation – the Galar Taxi! That’s one cool way to travel, don’t you think?

12. Gyarados

Gyarados roaring from the sea
Source: Bulbapedia

Rampaging and thrashing everything in its way, Gyarados angrily joins our cool list!

Gyarados is known as a vicious and violent Pokemon. Something curious happens to the calm and head-empty Magikarp to become an angry Pokemon like this. Legends say that Gyarados will easily destroy a village in its rageful state.

But it’s not its temper that made Gyarados join our cool list. What makes this Water/Flying Pokemon from Gen 1 really cool is its design. Cosplayers even get creative with it for their Pokemon costumes.

Gyarados’s design merges different ideas of sea dragons, sea serpents, and sea monsters like the kraken. Add in the koinobori, which is a windsock in carp form flown during Children’s Day.

There is also a legend that talks about how a carp turns into a dragon by leaping over the Dragon Gate. The original Pokemon Snap even referenced this by having Magikarp jump over a waterfall to evolve!

11. Solgaleo

Solgaleo in its normal and Radiant Sun phase
Source: Bulbapedia

Majestic like the sun and the mighty lion, the Sunne Pokemon Solgaleo shows us that it’s cool to be hot.

Solgaleo is a Psychic/Steel Legendary from Gen 7. Although it’s not a Fire type, it still shows its fiery sun theme through its behavior and second form.

Solgaleo is capable of storing massive energy in its body. The energy is so great that Solgaleo actually glows like the sun! If this occurs at nighttime, it will make the night sky look like it’s the middle of the day.

It actually has another form called the Radiant Sun phase. In this form, Solgaleo’s fur glows in yellow and light yellow colors. Its third eye opens as well.

Aside from those traits, Solgaleo’s name and titles are impressive enough to be mentioned.

Its name has a Latin origin – sol means sun, and leo means lion. It was once called the Emissary of the Sun and was referred to as “The beast that devours the sun.” How cool is that?!

10. Arceus

Arceus and its Plates
Source: Pokemon Fandom

It is only befitting that the Pokemon responsible for the creation of the Pokemon world opens our top 10! Bow down to the glorious (and definitely cool) Arceus!

Arceus is a Normal type Mythical Pokemon from Gen 4. Everything about it, from its design and ability, to its Pokemon lore and backstory, is spectacular.

According to myths and legends, it is believed that Arceus is the creator of some Pokemon, regions, and perhaps the entire Pokemon universe itself. It used its 1000 arms to shape reality.

It had titles like “The Original One” and is categorized as the Alpha Pokemon. In the game and anime series, organizations have sought after its god-like powers.

Stats and ability-wise, Arceus is capable of changing its type through its Multitype ability. Depending on the held Plate, it can switch to any type, thus quickly changing its strengths and weaknesses.

To sum it up, Arceus is versatile and awe-inspiring!

9. Luxray

Luxray using its X-ray vision
Source: Bulbapedia

If you think Luxray is cool too, you’ve got a keen eye like us. Pouncing at our top 9 spot is the Gleam Eyes Pokemon, Luxray!

Luxray is an Electric type and lion-inspired Pokemon from Gen 4. Unlike other lion themed Pokemon, the Luxray evolution line has black fur and mane. Quite unique!

Don’t get intimidated by its intense gaze though. Luxray has a special sight ability that lets it see through most objects – like an X-ray scan!

It uses this ability to hunt, track its opponents, watch over its cubs, or even help with finding lost kids.

This skill uses a lot of electricity, however, so Luxray would often sleep a lot to restore energy. You deserve all the cat naps, Luxray!

8. Bisharp

Bisharp showing its arm blade
Source: Bulbapedia

Stay sharp, our next Pokemon is edge-on-your-seat cool! Slashing through the competition is Bisharp, the Sword Blade Pokemon!

Interestingly, Bisharp stands out as a cool Pokemon due to its uniqueness.

Its typing is Dark/Steel, which is a typing combo unique to Bisharp and its pre-evolution. No other Pokemon has it.

Its design and theme are also a unique amalgamation of a lot of concepts. You can see elements of a soldier, a fighter with samurai armor, a kaijin, and a Kamen Rider-like character.

Its name seems to be chess-based too. Bisharp is similar to bishop, while its pre-evolution, Pawniard, probably refers to pawn.

This coolness seems to be getting a resurgence in the upcoming Pokemon games, if leaks are to be trusted.

7. Ceruledge

Ceruledge with its double swords
Source: Pokemon.com

Speaking of Scarlet and Violet, one of its newest Pokemon is eerily cool! Intimidating its opponents with its cool blue flame, give it up for Ceruledge!

Ceruledge is a Fire/Ghost Pokemon from the upcoming Pokemon Scarlet and Violet games.

Like a cursed knight, it wears armor filled with grudges. Instead of burning its opponents, Ceruledge wounds them and lets their life energy leak out. This will then restore some HP for Ceruledge.

With its dual greatswords, it channels bitterness and regret into its blades and uses them to hurt its enemies.

There seems to be a lesson here about “hurt people hurting people,” but we’re too blinded by Ceruledge’s cool armor and swords.

6. Zekrom

Zekrom flying in the sky with lightning
Source: Bulbapedia

Crackling the air with its coolness and lightning, the Dragon/Electric Legendary Zekrom takes the sixth spot!

Unlike our previous Pokemon, Zekrom isn’t really edgy despite being clad in all black. But one thing’s for sure, there are a lot of things that make this Gen 5 Legendary cool!

Stats-wise, Zekrom has the highest base Attack stat among all Electric type Pokemon. And according to the Pokedex, it uses its tail as a generator to make electricity to power its attacks.

This very same tail generator also enables Zekrom to fly in the air. The generator makes an anti-gravity field that makes Zekrom resist major effects from gravity and aerodynamic resistance. Heck yeah, science!

Most importantly though, Zekrom puts righteousness above all. Legends say that it destroyed a kingdom in the past due to its people not having righteousness in their hearts anymore.

Stay righteous, folks! Zekrom says it’s cool.

5. Dialga

Dialga in its normal and origin forme
Source: Pokemon Fandom, Bulbapedia

What time is it? It’s Dialga time! Securing our top 5 cool spot is Dialga, the Steel/Dragon Legendary from Gen 4.

Thanks to Arceus, Dialga was created along with Palkia and Giratina to form the Creation Trio. Palkia is in charge of space and Giratina is the representation of antimatter.

Meanwhile, Dialga is known to be the representation of time in the Pokemon universe. According to legends, time started ticking the moment Dialga was created.

Dialga lords over the realm of time and has the power to warp, speed up, slow down, and even stop time. Time travel? You bet. Dialga is the time and the time machine itself!

While time powers are cool enough, Dialga adds more coolness by showing its second form – the Origin Forme. In this, Dialga assumes a centaur-like appearance that also resembles its creator Arceus, as opposed to its usual sauropod-like form.

You can be our Pokemon timelord anytime, Dialga.

4. Suicune

Suicune standing with its flowing mane
Source: Bulbapedia

Elegantly running across grasslands with the wind in its mane, Suicune joins our cool list at number four!

Suicune is a pure Water type Legendary from Gen 2. The lore and circumstances behind its existence is quite an interesting one.

One stormy night, lightning hit Ecruteak City’s Brass Tower that resulted in a fire. Three unknown Pokemon got trapped in the flames and perished. Ho-oh took pity and revived the three in new forms, and one of them became Suicune.

Suicune is a Pokemon associated with the North Wind and spring waters. It can purify any dirty water with a mere touch. People say its compassion is as pure and clear as spring water.

Graceful and tenderhearted – that’s the lovely Suicune.

3. Lucario

Lucario attacking with Aura Sphere
Source: Bulbapedia

No need to peer into our hearts, Lucario. You’ve definitely earned the third spot on our cool list!

Due to its design, concept, lore, and real-life references, Lucario is definitely one of the coolest and most unique Pokemon in the series.

Lucario is a Fighting/Steel Pokemon from Gen 4. It can observe and analyze an opponent’s aura to guess its next moves. This immensely helps Lucario when it comes to fighting.

And with even more training, Lucario can detect feelings, even from people or Pokemon far away. Sadly, this can get Lucario stressed due to unfortunate things it ends up learning.

Because of this skill, Lucario only trusts those who have righteous hearts. When you earn its trust, you get a Pokemon who is very loyal and champions proper justice. Better give your Lucario a good Pokemon nickname.

Apparently, Lucario’s whole concept is based on the Egyptian god Anubis, who would judge the hearts and actions of the departed.

Cool and interesting – no wonder Lucario continues to be popular. It was one of the winners for Pokemon of the Year in 2020.

2. Greninja

Greninja with throwing stars and doing Double Team
Source: Bulbapedia

Quickly leaping into our number two spot is Greninja, the ever popular ninja frog from Gen 6!

From its design to its stats, it’s easy to see why Greninja is a favorite pick among Pokemon fans.

As the final evolution of Froakie, it gets a Water/Dark typing and a boost in Speed.

Froakie and its evolutions have always been stellar when it comes to hitting quickly, with Froakie being the fastest among all starters. With Ash-Greninja, it currently has the highest Speed among Dark types.

Aside from its Speed stats, Greninja excellently continues the frog theme of the evolution line, and even makes its ninja concept more apparent.

It gets a dark blue skin, with its tongue acting like a scarf wrapping around its neck and lower face to partially conceal its looks.

Greninja can even make throwing stars out of water! And when it uses Double Team, oh boy, I won’t blame you if it reminds you of Naruto’s Clone Jutsu.

Popularity-wise, if Lucario won runner-up during 2020’s Pokemon of the Year contest, it was Greninja who actually bagged the top spot.

He might be the coolest, but he swoops in our list with tail ablazin’! At number one, the hot-headed and ferocious Charizard wins our cool Pokemon list!

Charizard is a Fire/Flying Pokemon introduced in Gen 1. Longtime fans know how popular this ‘mon is, but here’s a quick rundown of Charizard’s popularity and why we ultimately picked him as the coolest.

To start, his Shiny form is creative and not just a recolor afterthought. It was revamped to become the charcoal-black version we have now.

Secondly, Charizard got two Mega Evolutions. Yep, this winged and flaming grumpypants actually got, not one, but two Mega Evos! More importantly, Mega Charizard X finally got the Dragon typing that fans have been clamoring for Charizard for years.

Thirdly, it’s the most common Pokemon used by Champions in the game. Most recently, it was Leon’s main partner Pokemon.

Lastly, Charizard content is neverending. We watched Ash struggle through training his Charizard. New game gimmick, like Gigantamax? You bet Charizard gets a new form.

And when it comes to merch, the Pokemon Center has it in spades all the time. There was even a Charizard-themed Pokemon Center in 2010.

When you consider all that, it’s hard not to pick Charizard as the coolest Pokemon ever.

Charizard fans continue to stay fed and satisfied with content, and we’re happy for you all. Stay cool!
