Bug Type Pokemon Weakness and Strengths Guide

Bug Type Pokemon Weakness and Strengths Guide

As one of the earliest Pokemon you encounter at the start of your game, Bug Pokemon have a special place in the franchise’s lore.

After frequent encounters, you’d think you’d find them all over the Kanto region.

Well no, they’re not the most common type nor the rarest, there hasn’t been a Legendary Bug type yet, and it hasn’t been paired up with Normal or Dragon.

Bug Pokemon also have some notable flaws that you can use to your advantage, such as having the lowest base stats for Special Attack and HP on average.

But despite these downsides, Bug Pokemon have their own pros too.

We list their strengths, weaknesses, and resistances – here’s the buzz on Bug Pokemon!

What Pokemon Are Good Against Bug?

Fire, Flying, and Rock Pokemon deal super effective damage to Bug Pokemon.

Some excellent moves to use on Bug Pokemon are Flamethrower and Flare Blitz from Fire Pokemon, Sky Attack and Air Slash from Flying Pokemon, and Rock Slide and Power Gem from Rock.

In addition, Fire, Fighting, Flying, Poison, Ghost, Fairy, and Steel can resist Bug attacks, making some of them excellent secondary types to counter Bug Pokemon.

With 7 types that can resist Bug attacks, Bug Pokemon are the most resisted type, tied with Grass.

What Are Bug Pokemon Strong Against?

Bug type moves are super effective against these Pokemon:

  • Dark
  • Grass
  • Psychic

Some great Bug attacks to use are Bug Buzz, which is an attack that can lower the target’s Special Defense; Leech Life, a move that can drain the enemy’s HP; Lunge, a move that can lower the target’s Attack stat; and Megahorn, a highly powerful physical attack.

And if you give your bug Pokemon some Ground and Psychic moves, it can hit back against types that resist it.

Interestingly, during Gen 1, Bug was strong against Poison too, and Poison was super effective on Bug, making it the only instance that two types were super effective on each other.

This was changed in Gen 2 onwards.

What Are Bug Pokemon Resistant To?

Bug type Pokemon are resistant to Fighting, Grass, and Ground attacks.

Aside from dealing super effective damage on Grass, Bug Pokemon can also resist its attacks.

However, even though Bug types can resist these three types, seven other types can resist Bug attacks, making Bug not so effective on a lot of other types.

Best Counters For Bug Pokemon

Some great Pokemon to use against Bug Pokemon are Charizard (Fire/Flying), Talonflame (Fire/Flying), Magcargo (Fire/Rock), Coalossal (Fire/Rock), and Aerodactyl (Rock/Flying).

Keep in mind that Bug Pokemon are weak to Fire, Flying, and Rock, and have the lowest base stats for HP and Special Attack, but have decent Attack stats.

Both Charizard and Talonflame have very good Speed stats to hit Bug Pokemon first. Charizard also has a great Special Attack and is a popular choice for many.

Both Magcargo and Coalossal can withstand Bug’s strong Attack with their high Defense. They both can also have the ability Flame Body that can burn their attacker.

Lastly, Aerodactyl can hit hard and fast with its high Attack and Speed.
