Best Pokemon for Ultra League in Pokemon GO

Best Pokemon for Ultra League in Pokemon GO

Ultra League is arguably the most popular competition in GO Battle League.

There’s no restriction to what type of Pokemon you can use but the maximum CP is 2,500.

Given Legendary Pokemon become more viable at this range of CP, you can expect to see some of the more powerful Pokemon the franchise has to offer in the Ultra League meta.

Here are the best Pokemon for Ultra League PvP in Pokemon GO.

Best Team for Ultra League

Every Pokemon has a counter, so therefore there is no definitive best team to use in GO Battle Ultra League.

However, here are some of the best teams to use to give you the best chance of winning your battle:

  • Cresselia, Registell, and Giratina (Altered)
  • Melmetal, Cresselia, and Swampert
  • Pidgeot, Cobalion, and Registeel
  • Trevenant, Walrein, and Swampert
  • Giratina (Altered), Cobalion, and Swampert

If your team consists of the Pokemon below, you will likely have an advantage against your opponent.

Ultra League PvP Rankings

We rank these Pokemon in order of their Ultra League performance below:

10. Virizion

Virizion Ultra League Ranking
Virizion has surprising bulk but most avoid Flying attacks at all costs
  • Resistance: Dark, Electric, Grass, Ground, Rock, and Water
  • Weakness: Fairy, Fire, Flying, Ice, Poison, and Psychic

Virizion is a Grass/Fighting Pokemon with good bulk and an impressive moveset.

Its best Fast Move is Double Kick making the Grassland Pokemon particularly strong against Dark and Rock Pokemon.

The best Charged Moves to use for Virizion are Sacred Sword and Leaf Blade.

The latter is an excellent counter for Water types like Swampert or Walrein.

Virizion does have a double weakness to flying though, so keep it away from the popular Pidgeot – as well as Charizard and Skarmory.

9. Trevenant

Trevenant Ultra League Ranking
Trevenant is one of the few Pokemon in the Ultra League meta with a higher attack stat than defense
  • Resistance: Electric, Grass, Ground, Fighting, Normal, and Water
  • Weakness: Dark, Fire. Flying, Ghost, and Ice

Trevenant has a max CP of 2,559 at level 40, which makes it excellent for Ultra League. However, this does make it expensive to get one at the 2,500 limit.

Using XL candy results and opting to have more HP and Def IVs makes it even bulkier.

On top of that, Trevenant can easily take care of Swampert, Cobalion, Cresselia, and Giratina (Altered), which are some of the top Pokemon in the Ultra League.

Trevenant’s moveset relies on its typing, which the Pokemon in the current meta does not resist.

Therefore, its best Fast Move is Shadow Claw, while the Charged Moves are Seed Bomb and Shadow Ball.

However, you should be mindful of Dark Pokemon, which are usually used against Giratina and Fire Pokemon, like Talonflame and Charizard.

8. Steelix (XL)

Steelix Ultra League Ranking
Steelix has a diverse moveset
  • Resistance: Bug, Dragon, Electric, Fairy, Flying, Normal, Poison, Psychic, and Steel
  • Weakness: Fighting, Fire, Ground, and Water

Steelix benefits from the addition of XL candy, allowing it to become bulkier by sacrificing Atk IVs.

Moreover, it has a decent moveset that is useful in the current meta of the Ultra League.

Its best Fast Move is Dragon Tail which boasts 4.33 DPT and 3 EPT. So, if your foe is weak to Dragon attacks it’s in trouble.

As for its Charged Moves, Steelix should use two of Crunch, Psychic Fangs, and Earthquake.

7. Regirock

Regirock Ultra League Ranking
Regirock has fewer resistances and more weaknesses than Registeel
  • Resistance: Normal, Flying, Poison, and Fire
  • Weakness: Fighting, Grass, Ground, Steel, and Water

Compared to its sibling, Registeel, Regirock is not at the top of the list but is still one of the best Pokemon in the Ultra League.

Like Registeel, Regirock boasts one of the best defensive stats in the game, naturally making it a good fit for GO Battle League.

Regirock uses the Fast Move Lock-On. This has the single best energy generation of any Fast Move in the entirety of Pokemon GO.

For the Charged Moves of Regirock, use Stone Edge and Focus Blast.

The former is used against Flying type Pokemon like Pidgeot, while the latter is used against Dark and Steel Pokemon.

However, it’s important to note that it has five weaknesses, and most of these are popular in Ultra League.

6. Pidgeot (XL)

Pidgeot Ultra League Ranking
Feather Dance has made Pidgeot soar up the Ultra League rankings
  • Resistance: Bug, Ghost, Grass, and Ground
  • Weakness: Electric, Ice, and Rock

Pidgeot has proven itself worthy as one of the best Pokemon in the Ultra League due to its moveset.

This Pokemon has access to Gust, a Fast Move with strong damage output and a 3 EPT, allowing Pidgeot to deal massive damage while still generating decent energy for its Charged Move.

Wing Attack is an alternative choice here which has only 2.5 DPT but does produce 4 EPT.

Both of these require the use of an Elite Fast TM, though.

As for its Charged Move, Feather Dance and Brave Bird are its best ones.

Feather Dance decreases the Atk of the Pokemon by 2 stages allowing Pidgeot to survive longer as its opponent deals less damage.

This is the move that has catapulted Pidegot into the Ultra League meta.

Meanwhile, Brave Bird is a risky Charged Move as it decreases Pidgeot’s Def by 3 stages.

Nevertheless, it is the most powerful Charged Move of Pidgeot, just avoid those Protect Shields!

Pidgeot excels in using its Fast Move to deal damage (if using Gust), rendering Protect Shields inadequate. That, combined with Feather Dance, makes it an excellent Lead for your team.

5. Swampert

Swampert Ultra League Ranking
Swampert is an ever-present in the GO Battle League meta
  • Resistance: Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock, and Steel
  • Weakness: Grass

There are numerous Steel types in the current meta, which makes Swampert one of the best Pokemon in the Ultra League.

Swampert can easily dominate anti-Giratina Pokemon and even the Fighting types that also counter them.

On top of that, there are only a few Grass types in the Ultra League, which means counters for it are relatively rare.

If you decide to add Swampert to your team, get Mud Shot as its Fast Move combined with Hydro Cannon and Earthquake for the Charged Move.

4. Registeel

Registeel Ultra League Ranking
If used wisely, Registeel is a nightmare for opposing trainers
  • Resistance: Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ground, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and Steel
  • Weakness: Fighting, Fire, and Ground

Registeel still remains dominant even in the Ultra League.

This Legendary Pokemon has a maximum CP of 2,447. While this falls short of the Ultra League limit and makes it expensive, the fact it gets fourth place on our tier list shows how strong it is.

Similar to the Great League, Registeel uses its bulk and moveset to not only take several hits but to terrify opponents from taking any of its Charged Moves.

Given Registeel’s damage output is tied solely to its expensive Charged Moves, it’s wise to use the Steel type Legendary Pokemon when they don’t have Protect Shields available.

For its Charged Moves use a combination of Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, and Zap Cannon.

The latter does require an Elite Charged TM, though, and given its coverage, it’s probably not worth using one to get it.

3. Cobalion

Cobalion Ultra League Ranking
Cobalion resists many types in the Ultra League meta
  • Resistances: Bug, Dark, Dragon, Grass, Ice, Normal, Poison, Rock, and Steel
  • Weakness: Fighting, Fire, and Ground

Cobalion is a new addition to the Ultra League meta due to the Season of Light update, where the Legendary Pokemon can access the Fast Move Double Kick.

Double Kick provides decent energy gain with its 4 EPT (2.66 DPT).

With Sacred Sword and Stone Edge as its Charged Moves, it is an excellent counter to Steel and Flying types.

Moreover, Cobalion has great typings and numerous resistances, which is why it is one of the best Pokemon in the Ultra League.

Be wary of teams with Runerigus, Deoxys-D, Trevenant, or Buzzwole, as Cobalion struggles to beat these Pokemon.

2. Cresselia

Cresselia Ultra League Ranking
Cresselia can cause havoc with its high energy generating Fast Move
  • Resistances: Fighting and Psychic
  • Weakness: Bug, Dark, and Ghost

The Lunar Pokemon, Cresselia, shines in the Ultra League primarily due to its bulkiness.

Access to Charged Moves like Moonblast and Grass Knot makes Cresselia an excellent counter to Giratina and Swampert.

It should be noted that Grass Knot is a Legacy Move meaning you must use an Elite Charged TM to let Cresselia learn it.

Its Fast Move is Psycho Cut with a 4.5 EPT (1.5 DPT), enabling Cresselia to use its Charged Moves quickly.

However, it is weak against the many Steel types in the meta, like Registeel, so you must pair Cresselia with its counter like Swampert or Talonflame.

1. Giratina (Altered)

Giratina Altered Form Ultra League Ranking
Dragon Claw can infuriate trainers with its low energy requirement
  • Resistances: Bug, Electric, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Normal, Poison, and Water
  • Weakness: Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, and Ice

The Altered form of Giratina is the most threatening Pokemon in the Ultra League and is a must-have if you want to dominate the league.

It has infuriated many Pokemon GO trainers with its defensive prowess and ability to spam Charged Moves.

It does have powerful counters but if your team is diverse enough this shouldn’t put you off the Renegade Pokemon.

You must have Shadow Claw for its Fast Move, as it has decent damage and 4 EPT, allowing Giratina to unleash its Charged Moves faster.

Furthermore, this compliments the coverage of its Charged Moves.

As for the Charged Moves, get Dragon Claw and Ancient Power. Dragon Claw costs less, so you can use it more frequently.

In contrast, Ancient Power is used against some of Giratina’s counters, like Togekiss and Articuno.

It will set you back 100,000 Stardust to unlock a second Giratina Charged Move but it’s worth it.

That is all for the best Pokemon for Ultra League PVP in Pokemon GO.

Knowing the best Pokemon can only take you so far, though.

There are many facets to being a top-ranked trainer in GO Battle League.

That includes knowing each Pokemon’s resistances and weaknesses, learning what moves your opponent will use for each Pokemon and even knowing how quickly they can charge them!
