Best Pokemon for Master League in Pokemon GO

Best Pokemon for Master League in Pokemon GO

Master League is the no holds barred GO Battle League of Pokemon GO.

In Master League, there is no CP cap which means this is where the absolute best Pokemon compete.

As a result, a Pokemon’s maximum CP becomes a vital factor.

Also, perfect IVs are relevant in the Master League format. This is because a Pokemon can reach a higher CP the better IVs it has.

Due to this, it is Legendary Pokemon that mostly dominate the meta.

With that said, here are the best Pokemon to use in GO Battle Master League.

Best Team for Master League

The Master League is currently dominated by Dragon and Flying types.

Here are some of the best teams used in the Master League:

  • Groudon, Zacian, and Dialga
  • Dialga, Lugia, and Kyogre
  • Mamoswine, Zacian, and Rayquaza
  • Ho-Oh, Zekrom, and Dialga
  • Melmetal, Lugia, and Dragonite

Of course, trainers have varying strategies for assembling teams so there is no definitive answer.

Master League PvP Rankings

Here are the top 10 best ranked Pokemon for GO Battle League Master League:

10. Mamoswine

Mamoswine Master League Ranking
Mamoswine’s Defense stat isn’t the best so avoid Charged Attacks where you can
  • Resistances: Electric and Poison
  • Weaknesses: Fighting, Fire, Grass, Steel, and Water

Mamoswine is one of the best Pokemon in the Master League due to its Ice typing, which counters the current meta filled with Flying, Dragon, and Ground types.

Powder Snow is its best Fast Move offering the highest energy generation compared to its other Fast Moves.

Avalanche and High Horse Power are the Charged Move that you should use.

Avalanche is cheap and has great damage, while High Horse Power gives Mamoswine coverage against Steel and Rock types.

In addition, you can also swap High Horse Power for Stone Edge if you want to take down Ho-Oh.

However, Mamoswine has a couple of flaws. It is relatively fragile and only has two resistances, along with weakness to the Pokemon in the meta.

9. Dragonite

Dragonite Master League Ranking
The original Dragon Pokemon can cause a lot of damage while it survives
  • Resistances: Bug, Grass, Ground, Fighting, Fire, and Water
  • Weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, Ice, and Rock

Dragonite is a staple in the Master League due to its Dragon typing and having access to the Charged Move Dragon Claw.

With Dragon Claw, it has an edge against other Dragon types in the meta except for Dialga.

Moreover, Dragonite can counter Ground-type Pokemon, specifically Mud Shot Groudon, due to its Flying secondary typing.

Its optimal moves are Dragon Breath for its Fast Move and Dragon Claw and Superpower for its Charged Moves.

This allows Dragonite to go toe to toe with Steel types and even have the chance of defeating Dialga.

However, it is very weak against Fairy types.

If you have Superpower as your second Charged Move, you can say goodbye to your Dragonite if it faces off against Fairy types such as Zacian.

Also, any Pokemon using Charm will tear through Dragonite quickly.

8. Rayquaza

Rayquaza Master League Ranking
Make the most of Rayquaza’s attack before you get hit
  • Resistances: Bug, Grass, Ground, Fighting, Fire, and Water
  • Weaknesses: Dragon, Fairy, Ice, and Rock

Rayquaza has one of the highest Attack stats in Pokemon GO, which is why it is one of the best Pokemon in the Master League.

In addition, it has access to one of the best Charged Moves in the game, Breaking Swipe.

Breaking Swipe can decrease the ATK of the opposing Pokemon, which can be annoying if your Pokemon heavily relies on Charged Moves.

This is why Rayquaza is excellent when the opposing trainer has 2 shields as you stack up the ATK debuff of Breaking Swipe, making them deal low damage.

Dragon Tail is its best Fast Move due to its damage output and energy generation.

Outside of Breaking Swipe, Hurricane is its second best Charged Move, as it can help Rayquaza against Fairy types.

However, Rayquaza is fragile even with the Breaking Swipe’s debuff, especially against Pokemon with highly damaging Fast Moves like Dragon Breath and Charm.

7. Mewtwo

Mewtwo Master League Ranking
A variety of different type Charged Moves makes Mewtwo unpredictable
  • Resistances: Fighting and Psychic
  • Weaknesses: Bug, Dark, and Ghost

Mewtwo has always been on the top of the Master League due to its incredible stats, specifically its high Attack and relatively cheap Charged Move Psystrike.

Moreover, it has access to numerous Charged Moves, making it a versatile Pokemon that has the potential to counter those in the meta.

For example, Focus Blast makes Mewtwo effective against Steel types like Dialga, Ice Beam takes care of Dragon and Flying types like Lugia or Rayquaza.

Lastly, Shadow Ball can take down Giratina and other Mewtwo.

These moves should be combined with the Fast Move Psycho Cut due to its massive energy generation (4.5 EPT).

The downside to Mewtwo is that it’s not bulky and only has two resistances.

Nevertheless, Mewtwo can still be an excellent addition to your team due to its offensive capabilities and versatile moveset.

If you really want to make the most of its high Attack, you can use Shadow Mewtwo at the expense of some bulkiness.

6. Ho-Oh

Ho-Oh Master League Ranking
Avoid Rock attacks at all costs when using Ho-Oh
  • Resistances: Bug, Fairy, Fire, Fighting, Grass, Ground, and Steel
  • Weaknesses: Electric, Rock, and Water

Ho-Oh has a unique Fire/Flying typing, making it resistant to Fairy and Steel and the perfect partner to your Dragon type Pokemon.

In addition, it can also take on Groudon and Zacian, who are at the top of this list. Ho-Oh is best used as a Closer due to its powerful moveset.

Incinerate is its best Fast Move due to energy generation (4 EPT).

For its Charged Move, Brave Bird and Sacred Fire are the strongest.

But Brave Bird is a risky Charged Move due to its self-debuff. However, it can still damage the opposing Pokemon, especially if they do not use their Protect Shield.

On the other hand, Sacred Fire is a fantastic Charged Move with a 50% chance ATK debuff and can decimate Steel types quickly.

Despite that, Ho-Oh has a hard time against Giratina, Kyogre, and Rock type moves due to its double weakness to Rock.

Ho-Oh is a Pokemon that needs to be used astutely.

5. Lugia

Lugia Master League Ranking
Lugia’s Aeroblast is the most powerful move in Pokemon GO
  • Resistances: Fighting, Grass, Ground, and Psychic
  • Weaknesses: Dark, Electric, Ghost, Ice, and Rock

With the resurgence of Groudon in the meta, Flying type like Lugia is slowly returning to counter it and a fantastic partner to it.

Lugia has a high bulk and a powerful moveset that can mitigate threats such as Mewtwo and Groudon.

The Gen 2 Legend is an excellent switch due to its bulkiness, as it can take on numerous devastating attacks from other meta Pokemon.

Go with the Fast Move Dragon Tail to take on Dragon Types, then have Sky Attack and Aeroblast (Elite Move) for the Charged Moves.

Aeroblast is a powerful move that can even dent Pokemon who resist it. It also has a chance of increasing Lugia’s ATK.

4. Giratina (Altered)

Giratina Altered Forme Master League Ranking
Altered Forme Giratina is a top Pokemon in both Ultra and Master League
  • Resistances: Bug, Electric, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Poison, and Water
  • Weaknesses: Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, and Ice

Both forms of Giratina are viable in the Master League.

Still, the Altered form of Giratina is more consistent, which Pokemon trainers prefer.

Even though Giratina Origin has a slightly higher CP and more firepower, Giratina Altered is bulkier and has excellent coverage.

However, it cannot close out battles, so you must pair it with nukes like Lugia and Zacian (Hero).

Shadow Claw is its best Fast Move, while Dragon Claw and Ancient Power are the best Charged Moves.

With its moveset, compared to Giratina-O, Giratina-A is better against Dragon Pokemon, and having access to Ancient Power makes it effective against Flying types.

3. Groudon

Groudon Master League Ranking
Groudon’s two best moves require an Elite Charged TM for each
  • Resistances: Electric, Poison, and Rock
  • Weaknesses: Grass, Ice, and Water

The recent GO tour Hoenn global event added the legacy move of Groudon, Precipe Blades, to its arsenal, solidifying its position as one of the best Pokemon in Master League.

As a Ground type, Groudon easily takes on Steel type Pokemon.

Its bulkiness and strong moveset allows it to withstand neutral Pokemon like Giratina, Zacian, or Mewtwo.

Groudon can learn Mud Shot or Dragon Tail as the Fast Move. Mud Shot gives you more energy, while Dragon Tail has more damage.

Even though Mud Shot is the recommended Fast Move, it does nothing to Flying types, making Dragon Tail an excellent option against them.

But, it will lessen the advantage of Groudon against Steel type and Zacian. As for its Charged Move, Fire Punch and the new Precipe Blades are the way to go.

Fire Punch can bait shields, while Precipe Blades can deal massive damage to Pokemon who do not resist it.

However, you need an Elite Charged TM for each of Fire Punch and Precipe Blades.

2. Zacian (Hero)

Zacian Master League Ranking
Hero Zacian is an excellent counter to the many Dragon types that roam Master League
  • Resistances: Bug, Dark, Dragon, and Fighting
  • Weaknesses: Poison and Steel

Zacian has proven its worth to be at the top of the best Pokemon in the Master League.

As one of the few Fairy types in the current meta, Zacian is your best counter to the abundant Dragon Pokemon in the meta.

In addition, it can also threaten Steel and Dark types that often come with the Dragon Pokemon.

Due to its typing, it can be made into a safe Switch.

On the other hand, its offensive capabilities make Zacian an excellent Lead in the early stages and can effectively clean up opposing Pokemon in the late stages.

Have Snarl as your Fast Move, then Close Combat and Play Rough for your Charged Move.

Optionally, you can have Close Combat and Wild Charge as your Charged Move, but you will have to sacrifice the ability of Zacian to go against Steel types.

The only downside to Zacian is its high energy cost Charged Moves and the self-debuff of Close Combat.

This Pokemon is also the only reason Metagross is slowly returning to the meta.

1. Dialga

Dialga Master League Ranking
The imposing Dialga has the impervious perk of being a Dragon type that isn’t weak to Fairy attacks
  • Resistances: Bug, Electric, Flying, Grass, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, Steel, and Water
  • Weaknesses: Fighting and Ground

Dialga has always been one of the top Pokemon in the Master League and, up until the current season is still a beast.

It’s due to its powerful moveset and unique Dragon/Steel typing, giving it numerous resistances.

On top of that, it is a Dragon type that is not weak to Fairy and Ice types.

Combining all of this makes Dialga a real problem to deal with.

Dialga can take on most of the Pokemon in Master League if you have the Fast Move Dragon Breath, then Iron Head and Draco Meteor for its Charged Move.

However, the release of the new Legacy Charged Move of Groudon, Precipe Blades, and other Ground types will cause issues for Dialga.

If you want to increase the odds of winning in the Master League, add Dialga to your team or, at least have an answer to it.

That is all for the best Pokemon for Master League PVP in Pokemon GO.

Always remember that there is no best team but there are Pokemon who define the meta in it.

That is why your team must consist of or at least one or two of the Pokemon in the list if you want to strive and excel in the Master League.
