Best Pokemon for Great League in Pokemon GO

Best Pokemon for Great League in Pokemon GO

There are three main leagues in GO Battle League that rotate periodically in a season of Pokemon GO. The first of these is the Great League.

There is no restriction on what Pokemon you can use but they must have a maximum of 1,500 CP.

While this does rule out some of the more powerful Pokemon in the game, there is a lot of Pokemon to choose from.

To help you assemble a team, we made a list of the best Pokemon you can use in Great League PvP.

Best Team for Great League

There is no absolute best team in the Great League, as there are counters for every Pokemon in the game.

However, here are some of the teams currently popular in the Great League meta:

  • Galarian Stunfisk, Azumarill, and Trevenant
  • Bastiodon, Sableye, and Medicham
  • Medicham, Noctowl, and Diggersby
  • Swampert, Skarmory, and Venusaur
  • Registeel, Sableye, and Altaria

While the best team isn’t definitive, if it consists of the Pokemon from the below table, you should be in good stead.

Great League PvP Rankings

Here are the top 10 Pokemon to use in GO Battle Great League:

10. Pelipper

Pelipper Great League Ranking
Pelipper is a good all rounder in GO Battle Great League but avoid Galarian Stunfisk
  • Resistance: Bug, Fighting, Fire, Ground, Steel, and Water
  • Weakness: Electric and Rock

Pelipper is a Flying/Water type that provides great Water-type coverage.

Having access to the Fast Move Wing Attack and Charged Move Weather Ball (Water) makes it a constant threat, especially if you team it up with Registeel or Galarian Stunfisk.

In addition, Pelipper can learn Hurricane as its second Charged Move, making it a perfect choice to deal with Pokemon who counter Steel Pokemon.

However, it performs poorly against tanks and can be quickly taken down with an Electric type move.

Nevertheless, Pelipper is one of the best Pokemon in the Great League to counter popular meta teams.

9. Altaria

Altaria Great League Ranking
Altaria’s Dragon Breath can infuriate opponents
  • Resistance: Bug, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Ground, and Water
  • Weakness: Dragon, Fairy, Ice, and Rock

Altaria is a must-have Pokemon in the Great League due to its accessibility. It only needs a little investment to build.

The Humming Pokemon has incredible bulk and can also deal massive damage due to its Fast Move Dragon Breath.

Dragon Breath allows Altaria to damage opposing Pokemon even if they have Protect Shields remaining.

Moreover, Altaria can deal with most neutral matchups but can be stopped by Azumarill and the inevitably used Steel types.

Nevertheless, Altaria is an excellent addition to your team as it can be easy to build and powerful enough to be relevant in the current meta.

Avoid Ice Type moves at all costs though, as it is double weak to them!

8. Bastiodon

Bastiodon Great League Ranking
Bastiodon has an incredible defense stat
  • Resistance: Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, and Rock
  • Weakness: Fighting, Ground, and Water

Bastiodon is a literal wall in the Great League due to its massive defense stat and numerous resistances.

This allows it to battle through Pokemon who do not hit it with super effective moves.

With access to Smack Down, a high damage Fast Move, it can easily take down Pokemon without even making them activate their Protect Shield.

However, Smack Down only generates 2.66 EPT which is slower than a lot of other Fast Moves.

Bastiodon is excellent against Altaria, Noctowl, and other meta picks who are not Fighting, Ground, or Water Pokemon.

Still, Bastiodon has double vulnerability to Fighting and Ground Pokemon so make sure to swap it out quickly if come up against these move types.

7. Scrafty

Scrafty Great League Ranking
Avoid Fairy types at all costs when using Scrafty
  • Resistance: Dark, Ghost, Psychic, and Rock
  • Weakness: Fairy, Fighting, and Flying

Scrafty with a unique Dark/Fighting typing is one of the best Pokemon in the Great League due to its bulk and moveset.

Its weaknesses aren’t plentiful among the Great League meta, either.

With the Charged Move Power-Up Punch, Scrafty is a great counter to Steel types, especially when your ATK is increased by one stage.

However, with a double vulnerability to Fairy, Scrafty can quickly be taken down by a Pokemon with a Fairy type Fast or Charged Move like Charm and Moonblast.

6. Trevenant

Trevenant Great League Ranking
With Trevenant’s high attack stat be prepared to use Protect Shields against it
  • Resistance: Electric, Grass, Ground, Fighting, Normal, and Water
  • Weakness: Dark, Fire, Flying, Ghost, and Ice

Trevenant is a dual Grass/Ghost type and is one of the best Pokemon in the Great League.

Even though it’s not bulky, it compensates with its strong moveset.

It has access to arguably one of the best Fast Moves in the game, Shadow Claw.

Moreover, it can learn Seed Bomb, a decent Charged Move that can be used to bait shields, and Shadow Ball.

Shadow Ball is a powerful move that is also unresisted in the current meta of the Great League.

Trevenant is a tremendous overall pick due to its offensive capabilities.

However, it can still be countered by Dark Pokemon, so make sure you have a strategy against it if you decide to use Trevenant.

5. Swampert

Swampert Great League Ranking
Mud Shot and Hydro Cannon makes Swampert a regular in GO Battle League
  • Resistance: Electric, Fire, Poison, Rock and Steel
  • Weakness: Grass

Swampert is the best “mudboi” in the Great League and is a massive threat to any team that does not have Grass type coverage.

However, it is not as bulky as other Pokemon in and around the meta. It can get easily be knocked out by any Grass type moves.

Still, if you use Swampert wisely, you can dominate your opponent with ease.

It has the Fast Move Mud Shot, which only comes second to Lock-On for energy generation, allowing you to quickly unleash Charged Moves on your enemies.

On top of that, its best Charged Move, Hydro Cannon, has an impressive 2 DPE.

This will require an Elite TM but Hydro Cannon is one of the best moves to use an Elite Charged TM on.

If you pair Hydro Cannon with Earthquake, Swampert can infuriate opposing trainers.

4. Medicham

Medicham Great League Ranking
Medicham’s Fast Move, Counter, is one of the best in Pokemon GO
  • Resistance: Fighting and Rock
  • Weakness: Fairy, Flying, and Ghost

Medicham is the perfect fit for countering Steel type Pokemon, like Galarian Stunfisk, with its high stats and diverse moveset.

With Counter, one of the best Fast Moves in the game, Ice Punch against Flying types, and Psychic for Fighting types, Medicham is a staple in the Great League.

Moreover, you can swap Psychic with Power-Up Punch if you want to make Medicham into a sweeper.

However, this will sacrifice Medicham’s coverage, so only do this if you need a Fighting type in your team.

3. Noctowl

Noctowl Great League Ranking
Noctowl’s Wing Attack and Shadow Ball is a deadly combination
  • Resistance: Bug, Ghost, Grass, and Ground
  • Weakness: Rock, Electric, and Ice

Noctowl is an excellent Normal/Flying type in the Great League due to its bulkiness and great moveset.

Wing Attack is its Fast Move of choice while having Sky Attack and Shadow Ball for its Charged Moves.

Moreover, Wing Attack got buffed in Season 13, increasing its energy gain to 4 EPT.

On top of that, with Shadow Ball, you can easily take down the best Ghost type Pokemon like Trevenant and Sableye.

Also, Noctowl is great against Fighting type and Dark type Pokemon like Medicham and Scrafty, making it a great addition to your team to counter some of the Meta Pokemon.

2. Galarian Stunfisk

Galarian Stunfisk Great League Ranking
Galarian Stunfisk is a nightmare for opposing trainers
  • Resistance: Bug, Dragon, Electric, Fairy, Flying, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and Steel
  • Weakness: Fighting, Fire, Ground, and Water

The Galarian variant of Stunfisk is a Ground and Steel Pokemon.

It can be pretty hard to get due to its rarity, but if you do, you will have an undisputed winner in Great League.

With a dual Ground/Steel typing, Galarian Stunfisk has numerous resistances, especially against the Pokemon in the Meta.

Part of what makes it so good is its fast energy gain due to its Fast Move Mud Shot, which has an EPT of 4.5.

Combined with Rock Slide, which only needs 45 energy, it’s easy for Galarian Stunfisk to bait shields.

On top of that, if you have Earthquake as its second Charged Move, it makes Galarian Stunfisk deal massive damage to Steel type Pokemon and can surprisingly even take down Registeel.

1. Registeel

Registeel Great League Ranking
If you come across Registeel with no Protect Shields you’re in trouble
  • Resistance: Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ground, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, and Steel
  • Weakness: Fighting, Fire, and Ground

Registeel is a durable Steel Legendary Pokemon and is considered the best in the Great League, despite its low ATK stat due to the 1,500 CP cap.

As it is a pure Steel type, it has many resistances, which makes it a tough Pokemon to counter.

On top of that, it has the Fast Move, Lock-On, that only deals 1 damage but has an EPT of 5, allowing your Registeel to quickly use its expensive Charged Moves.

Registeel’s best Charged Move, Zap Cannon, deals massive damage and has a 66% chance of debuffing the attack of opposing Pokemon.

Also, you can get Focus Blast by unlocking the second Charged Move of Registeel for a Fighting type coverage.

So when you encounter a Registeel in the Great League, deal with it as quickly as possible if you do not want your team to be wiped out.

That is it for our Best Pokemon for Great League PVP in Pokemon GO.

Our list consists of the top meta picks in the Great League of Pokemon GO, but this does not mean having them in your team results in a win.

You must still remember each Pokemon’s weaknesses and resistances – among other things.

However, using these Pokemon will give you a more significant edge over other Pokemon GO trainers.
